About

celloI am a freelance cellist in Chicago.  I perform regularly with post-rock ensemble The Paver, the duo Black Tie Elephant, and am available for weddings and events through Aptera Strings.  I have a private teaching studio of about 15 young cellists in Chicago, and direct elementary through high school orchestral ensembles at the Chicago Waldorf School.  In addition to teaching and performing, I am available for session and arranging work. I am a member at Soapbox Music, a co-operative recording studio I co-founded in Chicago in 2010.  The studio hosts a songwriting summer camp for young musicians, and is available throughout the year for recording projects.brendan_teaching2

I have a BM in cello performance,  a BME in orchestral music education, and I am certified to teach the Suzuki Method.   I have am lucky to have studied with some fabulous cellists and teachers, including John Kaboff, a respected teacher in the DC area, Laurien Laufman, professor emeritus at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Jean Dexter, a nationally certified Suzuki Method teacher trainer.

I teach the music I love on cello — emphasizing the classical tradition and mixing it up with folk, rock, hip-hop, jazz and blues.
